The cease-fire of 1918 was to occur on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Thus Nov. (Courtesy of the Santa Cruz Public Library collection) Civil War veteran Archibald Allen Morey lived to see the Veterans Memorial Building constructed. ![]() He also remembered the living not present, who’d fought in World War I just 14 years ago, with 2,000 veterans still in California hospitals, as well as the homebound, incapacitated in body, or mind. It was a vast crowd that attended the dedication ceremony in 1932, but Morey beheld in his mind’s eye those many comrades long gone, now assembled here in spirit. Morey had run away at age 15 to join the Union Army in 1864, then was for many years on the staff of the California Naval Militia. Morey, 89, (one of five surviving local veterans of the Civil War), never thought his eyes would behold this wonderful day. 11, 1932, the Veterans Memorial Building was dedicated in Santa Cruz, south of the main post office.
